Smart Agro Hub is a dynamic digital innovation hub in Greece focused on the development, testing, and application of advanced technologies for the agricultural sector. It also specializes in the design and implementation of open-field agricultural experiments, providing agricultural experimentation services through modern technologies and specialized digital tools.
To support these activities, Smart Agro Hub has established a permanent 4.5 hectare experimental facility in Aliartos, Boeotia, equipped with specialized equipment, modern technologies, and smart systems. Through its permanent experimental facility and partnerships, Smart Agro Hub promotes smart farming, sustainability, and knowledge transfer to Greek farmers and agricultural businesses.
About Smart Agro Hub
Smart Agro Hub is a competence center in the field of smart farming and an ambitious, dynamic initiative of the Agricultural University of Athens, developed in collaboration with innovative Greek companies active in agri-technology, supply chains, circular economy, energy, and digital technologies.
Its mission is to bridge the gap between scientific research and practical field applications, strengthening the competitiveness of Greek agricultural production. Through its e-situ™ Agricultural Experimentation service, Smart Agro Hub designs and conducts specialized field experiments using advanced digital tools, modern technologies, and smart systems at its permanent experimental facility in Aliartos, Boeotia.
The Challenge: Precision Irrigation Management for Agricultural Experimentation
As part of its activities in Aliartos, Smart Agro Hub required reliable, high-accuracy data to effectively monitor and manage the agricultural areas where multiple specialized field experiments are conducted. The need for continuous remote crop monitoring, irrigation automation control, and the collection of reliable real-time microclimate data presented a complex challenge.
In agricultural experimentation in particular, precise and repeatable irrigation management is a critical factor, as each experiment may require different irrigation timing and water volumes. It was therefore essential to establish an infrastructure capable of providing stable and reliable data acquisition, centralized farm management, and accurate data to support experimental decision-making.
The Solution: Smart Irrigation Monitoring and Management with SynField
To address these requirements, a large-scale deployment of SynField smart farming telemetry stations was designed and implemented at the Aliartos facility, comprising a total of 28 SynField X5 and SynOdos devices. The solution takes full advantage of SynField’s ability to create an extensive wireless network of field devices, providing coverage across the entire experimental area.
For remote irrigation management, more than 60 solenoid valves and flow sensors (hydrometers) were integrated into the system, enabling comprehensive irrigation monitoring and control. A weather station was also installed to continuously monitor environmental conditions.
The Results
Following the deployment of the SynField devices, Smart Agro Hub significantly enhanced the irrigation management and monitoring capabilities of its experimental facility, achieving:
- Complete remote monitoring of crops and field conditions through the SynField cloud platform.
- Centralized control of the irrigation network, including remote management of more than 60 solenoid valves and continuous monitoring of their operation.
- Continuous data collection and historical recording, enabling the analysis of measurement trends and supporting data-driven decisions regarding both irrigation timing and water volumes for each experiment.
- Greater precision and consistency in the irrigation management of experimental treatments, supporting the correct implementation and reliability of open-field agricultural experiments.
- The establishment of an integrated smart farming digital infrastructure that supports research, the demonstration of innovative technologies, and knowledge transfer to farmers and Smart Agro Hub partners.
The Smart Agro Hub Experience
“The collaboration with SYNELIXIS enabled us to establish an extensive, state-of-the-art smart farming network in Aliartos, providing wireless coverage across large agricultural areas at a low cost.
For Smart Agro Hub, the value of the system extends beyond monitoring and remote irrigation control. The data collected provide an important tool for our agricultural experimentation activities, supporting data-driven decisions for the precise application of irrigation in each experiment, both in terms of timing and water volume.
Access to critical data and real-time alerts is a valuable tool in achieving our goals in digital agriculture and modern agricultural experimentation.”
