The Farm

Located in Monemvasia, Laconia, Agia Sofia Estate extends across 12 hectares of sloping terrain and includes approximately 2,000 olive trees of the Athinoelia and Koroneiki varieties. The estate also grows avocados, citrus fruits, and vegetables.

Agia Sofia Estate operates a fully vertically integrated production process, with a modern olive mill, privately owned storage facilities with controlled environmental conditions, and a complete bottling line.

A total of 14 SynField remote telemetry monitoring and control devices were deployed, together with a wide range of sensors, providing the producer with comprehensive visibility and control over the farm.

Agia Sofia Estate: A Modern, Vertically Integrated Agricultural Business

Agia Sofia Estate stands out for its fully vertically integrated structure. By controlling the entire process from tree to final product, the business has developed a strong export-oriented profile, exporting almost 100% of its annual production to international markets.

Its flagship olive oil, 8K Organic Athinoelia, is produced from the rare Athinoelia olive variety and has built a strong reputation in international competitions.

According to the official records of the NYIOOC (New York International Olive Oil Competition) and the World’s Best Olive Oils guide, 8K has received five consecutive Gold Awards at one of the world’s leading olive oil competitions (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026).

The Challenge: Efficient Irrigation Management Across 12 Hectares

The main challenge for Agia Sofia Estate was the efficient management of irrigation and continuous crop monitoring without requiring the producer to be physically present in the field.

Before SynField was installed, monitoring soil moisture, environmental conditions, and the irrigation network relied heavily on on-site inspections.

This limited visibility made it difficult to prevent operational issues, optimize water use, and ensure efficient production without the producer’s continuous physical presence in the field.

The Solution: Smart Irrigation and Remote Monitoring with SynField

A total of 14 SynField remote telemetry monitoring and control devices were deployed, creating a unified system for managing irrigation, water availability, and crop conditions. The installation includes a wide range of sensors, including soil moisture sensors, voltage sensors (0–60 VDC), distance sensors, float sensors, flow meters, pressure sensors for the irrigation network, and automation equipment including one relay switch, and 14 solenoid valves.

In this demanding environment, SynField goes beyond simple monitoring. It serves as a central decision-support system. The platform continuously monitors environmental and soil conditions while enabling fully automated irrigation management.

More specifically, the producer can monitor soil moisture, soil electrical conductivity, and environmental conditions in real time. Flow and pressure sensors have also been installed throughout the irrigation network, enabling accurate monitoring and efficient operation of the irrigation system.
